It was July 2023, and the Super Mario Bros. movie had just been released earlier that spring. So naturally Owen requested a Super Mario themed 4th birthday party.
As a girl that grew up on Nintendo, his request was right up my alley! knew that I had to go big with the decorations, so got to work planning.
DECORATIONS
Table centerpieces were built from a green permanent marker on these eggs for Yoshi. While clear plastic bowls, painted red and white, sat on top of white pails for Toad’s mushrooms.
To create piranha plants I used styrofoam balls paired with red paint and white felt for the heads. And their bases were built from dowel rods and flower pots painted green, paired with some green felt. Huge piranha plants needed much larger pails painted green for the base.
I found a couple free Super Mario printable templates online and used them to print out a Happy Birthday sign, as well as some question mark boxes. Thankfully we had tons of Super Mario stuffies already, which were placed around the party to really amp up the decor.
ACTIVITIES
I created a selfie station where kids and adults could use these masks to take photos of themselves.
A piranha plant, beanstock (same premise but with balloons) plant, additional question mark and block boxes, yellow plates with lines drawn on to look like coins and some cloud balloons finished off the picture area.
Our second activity was a station where we allowed the kids to color over the Yoshi egg centerpieces with some markers and Super Mario stickers. Not only was it fun for all ages at the party, but the kids also got to add their finished eggs to their gift bags to take home.
The final station involved stomping on a balloon Yoshi egg to receive a toy hidden inside. The kids had a ball trying to pop the balloons, and the adults had a good time watching the chaos ensue.
And as I mentioned in a previous post, backyard parties are always a hit with the addition of a bounce house. The one we got for Owen’s party looked just like Princess Peach’s castle.
FOOD
I tried to keep the theme alive with the food and beverage station. Piranha plant grape and strawberry skewers provided a healthy snack, while Goomba pudding cups provided something sweet. Atomic fireballs, strawberry candies and efrutti banana candy jars completed the Super Mario look.
GIFT BAGS
Free Super Mario coloring sheet printables were found online for the gift bags. I just printed out the different pages on thick cardstock paper and put them on these rings to make them easy to flip through. Yellow gift bags that I drew a Mario star on, along with a printable “thanks for playing” Mario tag completed the takeaway.
GAME OVER
Owen’s Super Mario Bros. 4th birthday party was a huge success! A little bit of crafting and a whole lot of love went into making it a special event that has not been forgotten. Plus we have the customizable t-shirts we wore as proof.
