Life definitely changes once you have kids, and in almost every way imaginable.
One of the most drastic changes for me was the length of time I have in the morning to get myself ready. Back when I worked full-time, I needed a good thirty minutes every morning (and I consider myself a relatively low-maintenance type of lady!)
Those thirty minutes went to showering, getting dressed, a quick five-minute hair dry (the only blessing of having thin hair) and a minimal amount of makeup.
The Morning Rush: Finding Time for Yourself
Then I had my sons, and “me time” disappeared, replaced by spending as much time as possible on them and their needs. Looking back, neglecting my own routine wasn’t healthy for my mental health, and it is something I am still working to navigate to this day.
These days, I try to find at least ten minutes to myself every morning in between making breakfast, getting the kids ready, feeding the pups and leaving the house on time for school drop-off.
Some of that time is now taken up by making myself a cup of strong coffee (a habit that, sadly, only started after having kids.) That leaves about five minutes to look somewhat presentable in front of the other drop-off parents and teachers who see me bright and early.
So what is my secret to showing up looking classy yet casual in just five minutes? Here is my foolproof 5-minute mom uniform that works every time.
My Easy 5-Minute Mom Outfit Formula
1. The Ultimate Go-To: A Baseball Cap.
First, I put on a hat. Yes, you read that right! A classic cap is my absolute go-to item for getting ready in record time.
I keep hats in all different colors and with a variety of logos so that I can always match my outfit. Matching your hat to your clothes instantly makes you look more polished. Just put your hair in a ponytail, loop it through the back of your cap and you instantly have a sporty, put-together look.
2. High-Quality Black Leggings.
Second, I put on a pair of black leggings. Why leggings? They are comfortable, black is slimming on any body type, and they can easily be styled up with other layers.
Right now, these Zobha Leggings on Amazon are my absolute favorites. They are super inexpensive, completely opaque (no see-through mishaps) and hold up incredibly well after hundreds of washes and drying cycles.
3. A Fitted Base Layer (Tank or Tee.)
The next layer is a solid white or black tank or t-shirt. The key here is to choose something form-fitted so you don’t look like you rolled out of bed in your husband’s old nightshirt.
My daily go-to is this CRZ YOGA Tank with a Built-in Bra on Amazon. The built-in bra is a total time-saver! You can also find great, affordable options at Old Navy.
As you can tell, looking classy doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. These basic staples are cheap, but when styled together, they keep you looking on point.
4. An Oversized Denim or Linen Shirt.
The final clothing layer is an oversized denim or linen shirt worn open. I found a couple of brands I love at TJ Maxx, including Lola River and Sigrid Olsen, but you can also find similar oversized denim shirts on Amazon.
This layering piece ensures you don’t have your butt hanging out, which in my opinion is important when you are in a school setting. To each their own, of course, but I prefer to err on the side of covering up when heading to my kids’ school.
5. Quick Skincare, Minimal Makeup & Easy Shoes.
To finish the look:
- Pop in a simple pair of stud earrings.
- Apply a layer of moisturizing sunscreen to protect your skin.
- Add some quick definition with a NYX Contouring Stick and a swipe of mascara.
I’ve found this minimal makeup routine is essential for me. The contouring stick provides a dewy, fresh look when blended out (and can even double as a quick cream eyeshadow) and the mascara helps me look awake despite my very blonde eyelashes.
Instead of struggling with sneakers or boots, which take extra time, I just slide into my favorite Birkenstocks and head out the door. Sometimes I still forget the kids’ backpacks in the rush and have to run back inside, but at least I look good doing it!
